  16. OLLIE NORTH UNDER SCRUTINY AGAIN FOR DRUG RUNNING

  21. Feb. 7 (EIRNS) -- Oliver North's deep involvement in illegal 
  22. drug-smuggling and gun-running -- which was highlighted during 
  23. last fall's election campaign -- is again drawing attention. 
  24. Ollie claimed during the Virginia Senatorial campaign that he was 
  25. the "most investigated man on this planet." So far, he hasn't 
  26. been, not by a long shot, but it could still happen, if some 
  27. people get their way.

  29. It is widely known that a major exposure of the 1980s Mena, Ark. 
  30. gun-running and drug-running operation is in the works {1}, an 
  31. exposure which will hit Ollie North very hard. The story was, 
  32. until recently, scheduled to run in the Washington Post, and was 
  33. reportedly killed {2} after many weeks of review by that 
  34. newspaper's editors, but informed sources in Washington expect 
  35. that it will soon be published in another location.

  37. While many want to portray the Mena story as a piece of the 
  38. Whitewater scandals being run against President Clinton, the 
  39. truth is that Clinton has little to do with it." {3}.

  41. The real scandal of Mena centers around Ollie North and George 
  42. Bush. The Mena airfield in western Arkansas was one of many 
  43. locations used for drug-running operations which involved Ollie 
  44. North's Contra networks in Central America. North's supervision 
  45. of a massive drug-smuggling operation run by Contra operatives 
  46. was exposed during last fall's election campaign by former Drug 
  47. Enforcement Administration agent Celerino Castillo {4} and 
  48. others; Castillo showed, for example, that all of North's pilots 
  49. flying out of the Ilopango military airfield in El Salvador were 
  50. documented to be drug-traffickers.

  52. One of the key operatives in Arkansas for Ollie North's Contra 
  53. apparatus was Larry Nichols {5}, who is now going around the 
  54. country threatening President Clinton {6} and peddling Whitewater 
  55. stories. {7}. It was because Nichols was spending state time and 
  56. money working with Oliver North and the Contras, that Clinton 
  57. fired him from an Arkansas state job in 1988. {8}. Nichols was in 
  58. regular contact with Nicaraguan Contra leaders such as Mario and 
  59. Adolpho Calero in New Orleans, and with Gen. Richard Secord, who 
  60. ran the Contra re-supply operation for North and George Bush.

  62. Yes, George Bush. Contrary to the myths about "Iran-Contra" being 
  63. run by a lone Lt. Colonel out of the National Security Council, 
  64. the truth is that these and many other, less well-publicized, 
  65. dirty and illegal covert operations were run out of the office of 
  66. Vice President George Bush while Ronald Reagan was President; the 
  67. "Contra" operation, for example, including especially guns and 
  68. drugs, was directed from the Vice President's office and was 
  69. supervised by Bush's national security adviser and former CIA 
  70. colleague, Donald Gregg.

  74. The controversial Mena article which the Washington Post has 
  75. refused to run, was co-authored by former National Security 
  76. Council official Roger Morris and investigative reporter Sally 
  77. Denton, and is based on more than 2,000 documents concerning 
  78. Barry Seal, a major drug-runner and DEA/CIA informant who was 
  79. shot to death in 1986.

  81. Seal operated out of the Mena airfield in western Arkansas from 
  82. 1981 to 1986, flying guns out and drugs in. The documents 
  83. utilized by Morris and Denton in their article include Seal's 
  84. bank records, telephone records, and personal correspondence and 
  85. diaries, as well as extensive law-enforcement records.

  87. The Seal records confirm what is already well-known: that Mena 
  88. was being used to fly weapons into Central America, and that 
  89. drugs were brought back on the return flights. All of the 
  90. numerous efforts to investigate the Mena operation during the 
  91. Reagan and Bush administrations were blocked on "national 
  92. security" grounds.

  94. These dirty operations were run out of Bush's office under the 
  95. nominal authority of National Security Decision Directives Nos. 2 
  96. and 3, issued early in the Reagan administration. Out of these 
  97. came the Special Situation Group (SSG), headed by the Vice 
  98. President; and then came the Crisis Pre-Planning Group, an inter- 
  99. agency coordinating body whose staff coordinator was Oliver 
  100. North. Under NSDD-2 and NSDD-3, George Bush was in charge of the 
  101. entire "secret government" apparatus -- which not only ran covert 
  102. operations overseas, but also against U.S. citizens at home.

  104. This was the true story of "Iran-Contra," which was never 
  105. investigated either by Congress or by Special Prosecutor Lawrence 
  106. Walsh. Now, with new evidence about Mena circulating, and in the 
  107. aftermath of North's failed Senate campaign, there is a climate 
  108. building which could finally result in the first full 
  109. investigation of the crimes of George Bush and his flunky, Oliver 
  110. North. {9}.

  150. "peddling Whitewater stories": Nichols has stated time and again 
  151. that he makes no profit from his "Whitewater stories". Also, 
  152. LaRouche, if you're out there and if the Vatican will let you 
  153. respond, are the following persons *also* "peddling Whitewater 
  154. stories"?

  157.   b) Judge Jim Johnson: "My God, Larry Nichols was right.";
  158.   c) Mrs. Jerry Parks: "What Jerry had in those files could 
  159.      have unseated this President.";

  161.      people behind Clinton, had my father murdered.";

  163.      investigating the Henry/Ives death case.;
  164.   f) Scott Wheeler, reporter and talk show host;
  165.   g) Authors Terry Reed and John Cummings;

  168. {8} Regarding *New Federalist's* claim that Clinton fired Nichols 
  169. for working with North and the Contras: *that* is ridiculous. 
  170. Nichols, in fact, was threatening to blow the whistle on Clinton 
  171. and the gang. For further details on the whole rotten mess, see, 
  172. for example, *Compromised* by Terry Reed and John Cummings -- a 
  173. book, by the way, that *New Federalist* has praised highly.
